Executive Editors
Executive Editors make up the Executive Editorial Council (EEC), a small group who meet regularly with the Editor-in-Chief (EIC) to help set journal strategy, make high-level policy decisions, and provide oversight for editorial content to ensure quality and impact, especially as it relates to the JBJS mission of improving patient care. They also frequently lead the solicitation and peer-review process for Theme Issues.
Senior Editors
Senior Editors oversee subject-area groups of Associate Editors, coordinating efforts to ensure timely, high-quality, and consistent editorial decisions while respecting each editor’s expertise. In most cases, Senior Editors are responsible for triaging manuscript assignments among the Associate Editors and sending appropriate manuscripts to Statistics and Methodology Editors.
Working closely with the Executive Editorial Council and JBJS leadership, Senior Editors also provide strategic input on editorial priorities and trends, recommend and solicit high-impact content aligned with JBJS’ mission, identify emerging and cross-disciplinary areas of interest worldwide, and represent JBJS within the academic and subspecialty community to promote submissions, excellence, and visibility.
The Senior Editor role is currently exclusive to the JBJS flagship journal. In the sister journals, much of the same responsibilities are performed by either the Editor of the journal or a small group of Deputy Editors.
Associate Editors
Associate Editors play a central role in the day-to-day management of manuscript submissions, overseeing the peer review process from initial assessment through final recommendation to ensure high standards of quality, integrity, and efficiency. They identify and collaborate with expert reviewers, provide authors with clear and constructive guidance to strengthen submissions, and work closely with Senior Editors and Methodology and Statistics Editors to maintain consistent editorial quality, best practices, and timely decision-making in support of the journal’s mission.
Consulting Editors
Consulting Editors are Editors-in-Chief Emeriti. They perform many of the same tasks as Associate Editors and serve in the role of Editor-in-Chief for manuscripts on which the standing Editor-in-Chief is an author.
Statistics and Methodology Editors
Statistics and Methodology Editors provide expert evaluation of the statistical and methodological rigor of submitted manuscripts. Acting in a role similar to reviewers, they assess study design, analysis, and reporting, and provide clear, constructive feedback to strengthen scientific validity, transparency, and adherence to best practices across the journal’s content.
All scientific research manuscripts that will eventually be accepted and published in JBJS or JBJS OA should undergo at least one round of statistical and/or methodological review.
