Theme Issues

Theme Issues are special editions of the flagship Journal that focus on a specific topic, with approximately 80% of the content within the issue dedicated to that theme. The Journal publishes one Theme Issue each quarter.

Topics for Theme Issues are selected by the Executive Editorial Council in collaboration with the Editor-in-Chief and are often scheduled to coincide with relevant meetings or events in the orthopaedic community. The Executive Editor appointed to lead a Theme Issue oversees the solicitation of Perspective-type articles and collaborates with a Senior Editor, who manages the peer review process and helps identify high-quality scientific articles in the submission pipeline that may be well suited to the theme.

Once the topic and editorial team for a Theme Issue are finalized, the Editors are provided with the JBJS Guest Editor Guidelines and Theme Issue Workflow Guidelines. Throughout the process, the Editors meet regularly with the Editorial Office and the Editor-in-Chief to ensure all publication deadlines are met.

Theme Issues provide significant value to readers and the orthopaedic community by offering focused, authoritative explorations of timely topics in orthopaedics. By bringing together expert perspectives and high-quality research within a single issue, Theme Issues highlight current advances, identify knowledge gaps, and serve as a lasting resource for clinicians, researchers, and educators seeking a comprehensive understanding of a specific area of orthopaedics.
